How India’s Election Commission Ensures Transparent Polls

In a rare comment, former U.S. President Donald Trump praised India’s voter‑identification protocol, positioning it as a benchmark for electoral integrity. While advocating for the “Serve America Act” that would make a photo ID mandatory for federal elections in the United States, Trump highlighted the Indian model that integrates a government‑issued photo card with a constantly updated electoral register.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) stands at the heart of this system. As an autonomous constitutional authority, the ECI conducts Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state assembly, council, presidential and vice‑presidential elections. The massive 2024 general election saw more than 642 million votes cast, ranking it among the largest democratic exercises worldwide.

The process begins with the voter list, compiled by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) who gather, verify and update data at the grassroots level. Political parties can deploy Booth Level Agents to scrutinize these lists, flag discrepancies and submit findings to election officials, creating a built‑in system of checks.

On polling day, voters present an Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) or any other acceptable government ID. The e‑EPIC portal now offers a digital gateway for citizens to retrieve their ID details and election‑related information, streamlining verification.

Both polling agents (representing parties) and counting agents are present throughout the voting and tallying phases, respectively. Their continuous supervision adds an additional layer of security and transparency.

Technology plays a pivotal role. The country uses Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) paired with Voter‑Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) printers. Comprehensive protocols govern every aspect of these machines—from commissioning and sealing to secure transport, storage and post‑poll validation. Strong rooms, independent observers and rigorous counting procedures further reinforce the system’s credibility.

Experts assert that India’s electoral robustness stems from a series of overlapping safeguards: constitutional oversight, administrative diligence, party‑level audits, candidate monitoring and sophisticated technology—all contributing to a resilient and trustworthy democratic process.
