India's BRICS chairmanship emphasizes cooperation and sustainability

As the host nation for the 2026 BRICS summit, India has framed its leadership around four pillars: resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability. The summit, held at the India Pavilion in New Delhi, will run from Saturday to Sunday and bring together leaders from the core ten members and invited partners.

Key discussions will revolve around strengthening intra‑BRICS collaboration on shared priorities, including counter‑terrorism, climate action, agricultural development, labour markets and the international financial architecture. The agenda also emphasizes people‑to‑people connections through cultural programs and business‑to‑business initiatives.

During the preparatory phase, more than 350 high‑level engagements were conducted across 25 Indian cities, focusing on political‑security, economic‑financial and socio‑cultural dimensions. These interactions are designed to translate dialogue into tangible, development‑focused results that benefit all members.

The Ministry highlighted that India, a founding member of BRICS, previously chaired the grouping in 2012, 2016 and 2021. The 2026 chairmanship marks its fourth term and aligns with the twentieth anniversary of the bloc, underscoring the symbolic significance of India’s leadership.
