Bilateral trade negotiations between India and the United States are gaining pace, with a senior US team slated to visit New Delhi next month. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal confirmed the likelihood on Friday, though specific dates are pending finalization. The anticipation follows a productive April trip by Indian negotiators to Washington, where they hammered out details of an interim trade agreement. This pact is a crucial stepping stone toward a full-fledged bilateral trade accord (BTA). Speaking to the press, Agarwal expressed confidence: "The US team should arrive shortly, likely next month." He added that talks are ongoing without interruption, leading to an eventual signing. US Ambassador Eric Garcetti reinforced this narrative on Monday via X, pledging the Trump government's full dedication to robust trade and investment relations. He outlined priorities like boosting business prospects, reducing red tape, and spurring Indian investments stateside for shared prosperity. Garcetti celebrated record US investments under Trump, spotlighting Indian pledges exceeding $20.5 billion in high-tech fields, manufacturing, and pharma. Notably, 12 companies unveiled $1.1 billion in commitments on May 6, fostering employment and supply chain stability. "These partnerships are generating genuine jobs in America and building strong supply chains. It proves that collaboration between the two biggest democracies benefits all," he remarked. Earlier, the Commerce Ministry on April 24 detailed advancements from Washington discussions on market access, non-tariff barriers, tech impediments, customs, investment promotion, security, and digital commerce. Held April 20-23, the sessions were constructive, yielding progress and a vow for continued engagement. Rooted in a February 7 joint declaration, this framework supports an interim pact en route to a comprehensive BTA. With both nations aligned, the upcoming visit could mark a pivotal chapter in Indo-US economic synergy.
