India’s Space Programme Gains Momentum with Heaviest Satellite to Date

The successful launch of the EOS‑05 advanced Earth observation satellite marks a pivotal moment for India’s space agenda. Using the GSLV‑F17 launch vehicle, ISRO placed a 2,367‑kilogram payload into a precise geo‑synchronous orbit, the heaviest satellite ever launched by the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle series.

Since its inaugural GSLV‑D1 flight, which lifted a 1,536‑kilogram payload, the vehicle has undergone systematic upgrades in structural mass optimisation and propulsion efficiency. These refinements culminated in the current mission’s achievement, showcasing the robustness of India’s indigenous launch capabilities.

ISRO chairman Dr. V. Narayanan highlighted the strategic importance of the EOS‑05 mission, noting its advanced imaging features that will enhance weather forecasting, disaster management, and resource monitoring across the region.

The launch also paves the way for future collaborations. Dr. Narayanan outlined two operational models: a fully government‑run system or an outsourced model involving private players. The latter could open new commercial avenues and accelerate the development of a vibrant Indian space economy.
