India's Record Export Surges Boost Bihar's Farmers and Small Industries

The Union Ministry of Commerce announced that India's export tally reached an unprecedented $863.1 billion in FY 2025‑26. This surge is closely linked to a series of Free Trade Agreements that have expanded market access for a variety of Indian goods. Bihar, with its rich agricultural base and growing manufacturing ecosystem, stands to gain considerably from this wave of global trade.

Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized that Bihar's agricultural produce, processed foods, textiles, leather, footwear, engineering goods, chemicals and pharmaceuticals are now finding receptive buyers beyond India’s borders. The minister highlighted that these products are no longer limited to the domestic market; they are securing footholds in several foreign economies, promising higher incomes for the state's farmers and entrepreneurs.

The government's export diversification strategy includes signing new FTAs, intensifying trade negotiations with major economies, and launching incentive programs through Export Promotion Councils, overseas missions and industry bodies. Over the past five years, India has entered nine pivotal agreements—ranging from the India‑Mauritius CEPA to the India‑New Zealand FTA—each aimed at boosting bilateral trade, widening market reach and leveraging shared economic strengths. By reducing technical obstacles and aligning with international standards, these accords facilitate smoother entry of Indian products into global markets and help mitigate non‑tariff barriers.
