India‑New Zealand FTA Opens Door for UPI‑Based Cross‑Border Payments
The recent free‑trade agreement signed on 27 April 2026 between India and New Zealand is expected to unlock new opportunities for the Unified Payments Interface to handle cross‑border transactions.
Todd McLell, New Zealand’s Trade and Investment Minister, said that the partnership will allow seamless, low‑cost money transfers, building on UPI’s current coverage of about 49 percent of the world’s real‑time digital payment volume.
UPI is already live in nine countries, and last month it was introduced in Greece, enabling fast and secure international remittances.
McLell stressed that strengthening connectivity, including new shipping routes and enhanced air links, will reinforce the trade relationship, especially as global supply‑chain uncertainties persist.
