India-Australia Partnership Highlights Trade, Defence, Technology at Melbourne Summit

The India‑Australia Annual Leaders Summit, scheduled for 8‑10 July in Melbourne, will serve as a platform for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to chart the next phase of their bilateral cooperation.

Australia’s Prime Minister’s Office highlighted that the summit will underline a comprehensive strategic partnership built on strong economic and cultural links. India, now one of the world’s fastest‑growing economies, is a key trade partner for Australia, and the two nations are committed to deepening collaboration in sectors such as defence, security, and advanced technology.

Both leaders are expected to announce initiatives that expand trade volumes, enhance joint defence exercises, and promote technology transfer, thereby delivering measurable benefits to their respective economies. Albanese, who previously met Modi at the G20 summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, expressed pride in welcoming the Indian premier to Australia’s annual forum.

He noted that the Indo‑Pacific partnership has never been more critical and that a stronger alliance will contribute to regional stability and prosperity. The summit will also provide an opportunity to engage with business leaders and sportspersons, reinforcing people‑to‑people ties.

After the Melbourne meetings, Modi will travel to New Zealand for a state visit on 10‑11 July, the first by an Indian prime minister in about forty years. In Auckland, he will hold bilateral talks with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, reviewing progress in trade, commerce, and defence, and addressing the sizable Indian diaspora.
