India Targets 200 GW Nuclear Power and AI Skill Training for Youth
New Delhi, August 15 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address outlined an ambitious agenda that includes reaching 200 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity and launching a nationwide artificial intelligence skill‑training programme for one crore young Indians. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) hailed these moves as pivotal for the country's future.
President Nirmal Kumar Minda praised the "Sapt Dhara" vision, which aims to transform India into a developed nation by 2047 through inclusive, sustainable and rapid economic growth. He said the roadmap provides a clear direction for multi‑dimensional development.
The emphasis on self‑reliance, especially in critical minerals, semiconductor manufacturing and other strategic sectors, was described as a positive step toward reducing import dependence and bolstering India's industrial and defence capabilities.
The nuclear power target, supported by the announcement of five new reactors, is expected to secure long‑term energy supply and deliver reliable, affordable electricity to power industry and households alike.
On the human capital front, the Prime Minister's promise of free online coaching and AI training for a massive youth cohort was welcomed as a catalyst for productivity, employment and innovation. Minda highlighted that India's youthful population is its greatest strength when equipped with cutting‑edge skills.
The call to see 50 Indian companies in the Fortune Global 500 and to elevate an Indian bank into the top five worldwide was seen as a bold signal for global competitiveness, though it will require sustained innovation, scale, capital access and smoother business processes.
FICCI also expressed support for expanding free trade agreements, deepening global trade ties, pursuing blue‑water exploration and strengthening India's strategic presence abroad, noting that new market access and integration into global value chains will generate fresh opportunities for manufacturers, MSMEs and exporters.
Finally, Minda commended the drive to modernise outdated laws, accelerate economic reforms and instil a culture of efficiency, accountability and commitment, which together will lay a strong foundation for a more competitive, innovation‑driven and investment‑friendly economy.
