EPFO Salary Threshold Increase Promises Greater Pension Security

The Government of India has approved a hike in the EPFO mandatory wage ceiling, moving the limit from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month. The decision, announced on Thursday, has been welcomed by industry chambers and labour federations as a step that will enlarge the safety net for Indian workers and push the economy toward greater formal employment.

Jyoti Vij, senior director at FICCI, told reporters that the prior amendment dated back to 2014, when the average wage level was considerably lower. She said the new ceiling reflects the present‑day earnings scenario and is expected to bring an additional 5.1 million workers under the EPF umbrella. This expansion is projected to improve job security, encourage longer tenures with a single employer, and bolster post‑retirement financial stability.

Vij also pointed out that access to provident fund, pension and related benefits boosts employee morale and reduces turnover. "When workers are confident that they will have a reliable income after retirement, they are more motivated and tend to remain with their organization for an extended period," she added.

Girish Chandra Arya, the all‑India secretary of the Indian Labour Union, praised the move, stating that the Rs 15,000 ceiling set in 2014 had become obsolete in light of rising wages and changing employment patterns. He called the amendment a "significant and laudable" step for the welfare of the workforce. Arya warned that the benefits will not stop at the approximately 5.5 million workers now covered; as the government continues to promote formalisation, more labourers from the unorganised sector will be drawn into EPF, ESIC and bonus schemes, securing long‑term pension and insurance coverage for themselves and their families.
