Illegal Stay Probe Leads to Thai Woman’s Capture at South Kolkata Spa

A targeted operation by Kolkata police on Sunday resulted in the capture of a Thai woman from a spa on Sarat Bose Road in South Kolkata. The raid was part of a larger effort to locate foreign citizens who might be residing in India without valid documentation.

During questioning, the woman could not produce a current passport or visa. Checks confirmed that her Thai passport was set to expire in 2025 and her Indian tourist visa had expired on 27 February 2021, meaning she was staying in the country without the legally required permission.

The central government has recently re‑emphasised that foreigners without a valid visa or other essential documents will not be permitted to remain in India. Following these guidelines, police have increased monitoring activities across Kolkata and other West Bengal districts. A special verification team now conducts regular inspections at hotels, guest houses, spas, rental houses and similar establishments to ensure compliance.

Authorities are now investigating how the Thai citizen managed to remain in India for an extended period, the places she used as accommodation, her network of contacts, and any possible links to organised immigration rings. The case has been forwarded to central agencies. She will appear before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office and stay in custody at Tollyganj Women’s Police Station until the legal process concludes.
