Ahmedabad’s Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) has scripted history by becoming India’s top government facility for kidney transplantation, clocking 502 successful procedures in 2025 alone. This feat cements its status as a pioneer in organ transplant surgery within the public sector.
Breaking down the numbers: 157 from cadavers, 90 swap cases, 49 for children, and 43 using robotic assistance. The center attracted patients from far and wide, with 170 coming from outside Gujarat, highlighting its nationwide appeal and expertise.
In a candid conversation, IKDRC Director Dr. Pranjal Modi detailed the accomplishments. ‘We’ve done 502 kidneys and 86 livers this year, mostly under PMJAY. Gujarat residents made up 332 cases, with equal care for all,’ he stated. The integration of advanced tech, especially robotics, has been game-changing. Robotic transplants are on an upward trajectory, now offered free by the state government post-CM Bhupendra Patel’s robot launch in February last year, enabling 43 this year with targets hitting 150.
Affordability drives IKDRC’s mission, particularly for the vulnerable. A whopping 318 transplants fell under Ayushman Bharat, ensuring zero out-of-pocket expenses. Grateful recipient Rajabhau Gogri shared, ‘The entire treatment was free—government footed the bill.’ Similarly, Sabarkantha’s Abhishek Kushwaha commended, ‘Kudos to PM and CM for supporting every stratum of society.’
IKDRC’s prowess extends to liver transplants, with 86 completed in 2025. Guided by Gujarat’s health department under CM Patel, the institute exemplifies innovation and equity in healthcare, inspiring peers across the country to elevate standards and accessibility.
