IIT Bombay Apologizes for Earlier Statements on Sahil Wakode Death

The management of IIT Bombay issued a public apology on Monday for the statements it released earlier concerning the death of second‑year B.Tech student Sahil Wakode. The institute admitted that sharing details about the circumstances of his death before the conclusion of a formal inquiry was inappropriate.

Officials highlighted that the Mumbai crime branch is leading the investigation, focusing on digital evidence from the student’s phone and a thorough forensic analysis of the hostel room where the incident occurred. No suicide note was found in the room, prompting investigators to search electronic records for clues.

In the same communication, the university reiterated that Director Shirsh B. Kedare has not resigned, countering rumors that spread across social media platforms. The board of governors has called a special meeting to address the 18 demands submitted by protesting students, which include the director’s removal, but no final decision has been taken yet.

Additionally, the institute confirmed the immediate suspension of Professor Dula, who acted as the invigilator during the exam session that led to the student’s detention for cheating.
