Hydrogen Fuel‑Cell Train Marks Milestone for Self‑Reliant India
The launch of the hydrogen‑fuel‑cell train on the Jind‑Sonipat route is being hailed as a significant step toward a self‑sufficient India. Designed, engineered and assembled domestically, the train reflects the nation’s expanding capabilities in cutting‑edge rail technology. Its fuel‑cell system generates electricity from hydrogen, with water vapour as the sole exhaust, ensuring zero carbon emissions while in operation. By removing the need for diesel and the overhead electric lines required by traditional electric trains, the new rolling stock reduces both fossil fuel import bills and infrastructure costs. The ten‑coach, 3,200 hp train joins a short list of global operators of hydrogen‑powered rail and stands out as one of the longest passenger units of its kind.
