Humayun Kabir Faces Legal Notice Ahead of Rehenagar By-election

Ahead of the October 6 by‑election in the Rehenagar Assembly seat, West Bengal MLA Humayun Kabir has been served a legal notice concerning a disputed audio clip that recently went viral on social platforms. The notice, dated September 19, instructs Kabir to report to Baharampur Police Station on September 21 at 11 a.m. to cooperate with the investigation led by Officer Ravindranath Biswas.

The audio in question allegedly captures Kabir making statements deemed incendiary. While the clip's authenticity remains unverified, the complaint filed by authorities has invoked relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code. Non‑compliance could trigger penalties under Section 208.

When police attempted to serve the notice at Kabir's residence on Saturday, he was absent and the documents were given to his son, Gulam Nabi Azad. Kabir later claimed the incident was an effort to intimidate voters and asserted that he would meet the investigators at a suitable time to clear his name.

He also alleged that the recording was fabricated to trap him, saying he has appealed to the superintendent of police for a transparent inquiry.
