Human Rights Commission Orders Probe into ₹5 Crore Extortion Claim Against Punjab CM’s Wife

The National Human Rights Commission has formally recorded a complaint that the wife of Punjab’s chief minister sought a sum of five crore rupees to conceal a rape accusation. The complaint cites statements made by former Punjab judge Justice Ranjit Singh and highlights concerns that such interference could jeopardise the victim’s safety, dignity and right to a fair investigation. Acting under Sections 12 and 13 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the NHRC has instructed the Punjab government’s chief secretary and the DGP to conduct an independent inquiry and forward a report of actions taken within two weeks.
