How One Farmer's Tragedy Sparked a Natural Farming Revolution

Kalpesh Patel's journey began with heartbreak. When his father died of cancer linked to years of heavy pesticide use, the Surat farmer vowed never to repeat the same mistake on his own land. He left his chemical-operator job at a local factory and committed fully to natural methods starting in 2019. After completing government training, Kalpesh learned to prepare jeevamrit and adopted a forest-like "jungle model" on his eight bighas. He now grows fifty-plus banana varieties including Poovan, Grand Naine, and Blue Java, achieving average bunch weights above 30 kilograms. One standout harvest produced a 73-kilogram bunch, far exceeding the usual 20-30 kilograms. By cutting out synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, he saves 15,000-20,000 rupees per bigha annually. The improved soil health has boosted output, delivering 10-12 lakh rupees yearly from just 3.5 bighas. Kalpesh further increases earnings by processing unsold bananas into wafers and powder, selling everything under his own brand at the Vesu natural produce market. His results have attracted national notice. Central Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan shared Kalpesh's story on social media, and farmers from other states now place orders shipped via courier. The model supports Prime Minister Modi's vision and receives backing from Gujarat's state programs and Governor Acharya Devvrat's village outreach.
