Horatti Delays Resignation, Calls for More Time Amid Party Dispute

Karnataka's Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti has asked for an extension before stepping down, despite previously confirming his resignation for August 14.

After a meeting with Chief Minister D.K. Shivkumar at the official residence, Horatti appeared upset and told reporters that he remained firm on his earlier statements. He added that if the Congress party wishes to file a no‑confidence motion, it is within its legal rights.

The Congress government, however, is reportedly preparing a formal motion of no confidence against Horatti. Sources close to the party say that the move is motivated by concerns that Horatti consulted BJP leaders before taking critical council decisions, which they view as a breach of impartiality.

MLA Ivan Disuza is said to be finalising the notice that will be moved in the council. Meanwhile, the party has named veteran leader Salim Ahmed as its candidate for the chairmanship, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP for overlooking parliamentary conventions.

Horatti has also indicated that, even after resigning as chairman, he intends to remain a regular member of the council and continue participating in legislative business. He expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of trust from the ruling party.
