History and Traditions of Lalbaugcha Raja Since 1934

Lalbaugcha Raja was first installed in 1934 in the bustling market of Lalbaug, then known as Parle. The initiative was led by local fishermen and shopkeepers who, after the closure of the nearby market in 1932, prayed for a permanent trading space. Their wish was granted, and on September 12, 1934, the first idol of Ganesh was placed in the market. Since 1935, the Kambli family, headed by Madhusudan Kambli and his descendants, has been responsible for sculpting and maintaining the idol each year. Over the decades, the shrine has grown from a modest platform to a grand pandal, now themed on mythic motifs such as Mahakal.
