History and Belief Behind the White Banner at Kosgai Dai Temple, Chhattisgarh

Ma Kosgai Dai’s temple, situated on a rocky hill in Korba, Chhattisgarh, is famed for its white banner ritual. According to worshippers, the goddess fulfills heartfelt wishes, a claim supported by numerous personal accounts of answered prayers. The white flag, lifted each morning, stands for calmness and good fortune, setting the shrine apart from other power‑centred temples that favor red flags.

The priest in charge explained that his forebears tried repeatedly to build a shelter over the sanctum, but each effort collapsed for reasons that remain unclear. As a result, the deity is revered as a sky‑dwelling figure, reinforcing the symbolism of the white flag that mirrors the open heavens.

Archaeological remnants on the same hill point to the historic Kosgai Garh fort, thought to be constructed by the Haidavanshi ruler Bahar Sai (also recorded as Baharendra Sai) between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its strategic location, dense forest, and stone walls still attract historians and trekkers alike.

During the Navratri festivals, especially in the Chaitra and Ashwin months, the temple experiences a marked increase in visitors. Pilgrims combine the ritual of flag offering with reverence for the ancient fort, creating a vivid experience that blends devotion, history, and regional culture.
