In a resounding endorsement of democracy, Puducherry’s assembly elections on Thursday drew a record-breaking 86.92% voter turnout by 5 PM, eclipsing the 2006 benchmark of 86% and the 2021 figure of 82.2%. The union territory’s 9.5 lakh electorate turned out in force, with women voters at 5.03 lakh leading the charge over 4.46 lakh men.

Security was paramount across 1,099 booths, including extra measures at 209 sensitive sites. Voting kicked off at 7 AM and wrapped at 6 PM officially, but token systems ensured no one in line was turned away, promising an even loftier final tally.

Enthusiasm spilled over from Puducherry into Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam, where serpentine queues symbolized civic zeal. The battle lines are drawn between Chief Minister N. Rangasamy’s NDA alliance, spearheaded by AINRC, and the INDIA front of Congress-DMK-VCK. Vijay’s TVK entry injects fresh dynamics into the fray.

This election, marked by peaceful conduct and unprecedented participation, stands as a testament to Puducherry’s maturing democracy. The outcome will define leadership for its 23 seats in Puducherry, five in Karaikal, and one each in Mahe and Yanam, setting the course for the next term.
