Historic Tradition Continues as India’s Army Chief Gets Nepali Honorary Generalship

KATHMANDU, August 16 – General Dhiraj Seth, the Chief of the Indian Army, began a four‑day official visit to Nepal’s capital on Sunday. The highlight of the trip will be a ceremony on August 17, organised by President Ram Chandra Paudel, where the Indian chief will be bestowed with the honorary rank of General of the Nepali Army.

The practice of granting honorary general titles to the serving chiefs of each other’s armies has been a hallmark of Indo‑Nepal military relations for many years, symbolising mutual respect and a shared strategic outlook. Nepal’s Defence Ministry and the Nepali Army have described the visit as a significant step toward strengthening the long‑standing friendship between the two forces.

General Seth travelled with a five‑member Indian delegation after receiving an invitation from Nepali Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel. Accompanying him was Komal Seth, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association. Their arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport was greeted by Lieutenant General Pradeep Jung, Vice Chief of the Nepali Army, and his spouse.

The honorary title ceremony on August 17 will reinforce the tradition of regular high‑level military interaction, which facilitates joint training, combined exercises, humanitarian assistance, disaster response and continuous defence dialogue between India and Nepal.
