Historic Renovation Culminates in Lavish Rituals at Madurai’s Meenakshi Amman

After months of intensive restoration, the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai unveiled its newly rebuilt structures with a lavish Prana Pratishtha ceremony on Thursday. The project, costing roughly 250 million rupees, saw the revival of the Veeravasantharayar Mandapam and the refurbishment of twelve towering gopurams.

A temporary Yagna Hall was set up on North Aadi Street, featuring 184 fire pits where priests performed a series of sacred fire offerings. Golden idols of the presiding deities were installed, and over 400 Shivacharyas conducted the rites, pouring water from the Ganga, Yamuna, Kaveri, Vaigai and other rivers into sanctified kalashas.

The kalashas were then taken in a magnificent procession that included temple elephants, livestock and traditional musicians, winding through the city’s main arteries before reaching the temple’s four Rajagopurams and golden vimana. The climax of the ceremony, the eleventh Kalagni Yajna, concluded at 7:40 a.m., signifying the completion of the Mahakumbhabhishekam. The temple opened its doors at 10 a.m., inviting devotees to partake in uninterrupted worship.
