Higher Institutes to Offer Dedicated Courses on River Governance

Central Water Power Minister C.R. Patil announced that universities and technical institutes across India will soon launch dedicated courses on river governance, water resource management and related policy studies. The decision aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader vision of creating a skilled workforce capable of managing the nation’s rivers holistically.

During the 20th meeting of the Empowered Task Force, Patil highlighted that these programs will blend scientific research, ecological restoration techniques, socio‑economic analysis and legal frameworks. Graduates will be equipped to address challenges such as sewage treatment, groundwater depletion, and climate‑induced water stress.

Patil called for collaboration between academic institutions, state water departments and industry partners to design curricula that reflect real‑world needs. He also suggested that city and state governments prioritize placement opportunities for students in river‑related projects, thereby linking education with employment.

The announcement was accompanied by a review of the Namami Gange initiative, where 527 projects have been approved, 368 of which are completed. Under the sewage infrastructure component, 219 projects have been sanctioned, delivering over 6,600 MLD of treatment capacity and a 5,200‑km sewer network.

Key stakeholders present at the meeting included Water Power State Minister Raj Bhushan Chaudhary, Secretary Archana Verma, Secretary Ashok K. Meena and NMCCG Director Rajiv Kumar Mittal, all of whom pledged support for the academic rollout.
