High-Value Crops and Mushroom Baked Goods Generate New Earnings for Uttarakhand Women
Beyond mushrooms, Uttarakhand's Tehri district is encouraging women to cultivate high‑value crops and specialty fruit varieties that command premium prices in urban markets. Projects launched in blocks such as Narendra Nagar, Jaunpur, and Chamba provide seeds, technical support and market linkages.
Mushroom cultivation remains a cornerstone of the programme. Women receive hands‑on training to grow button, oyster and butter mushrooms, which are then sold to hospitality businesses serving the steady flow of Char Dham pilgrims. The reliable demand has led to the establishment of micro‑bakeries where women turn mushrooms into snacks, pastries and ready‑to‑eat meals.
These bakeries report monthly revenues above one lakh rupees, a figure that significantly raises household earnings. The combined focus on mushrooms and other high‑value produce diversifies income streams, reduces seasonal vulnerability and strengthens the local economy.
Officials note that the initiative not only creates jobs but also fosters self‑reliance among women, positioning them as key contributors to Uttarakhand's agrarian growth.
