High Levels of Fecal Coliform Found in Bhopal Tanker Water Samples
Testing of water drawn from Bhopal’s main storage tanks has uncovered alarming levels of fecal coliform bacteria, according to a report presented by Congress leader Jitu Patwari on August 1. The analysis indicated that roughly 90 percent of the tank water samples contained sewage‑origin bacteria, far exceeding permissible limits.
Samples taken from the colar (gravity) distribution network were not much better, with about 25 percent failing to meet the national quality standards set for potable water. Patwari described these findings as a "public health emergency" and accused the state government of gross negligence in safeguarding basic civic amenities.
He called for the immediate formation of an expert panel to re‑examine the entire water supply chain, enforce strict monitoring, and hold accountable those officials whose oversight lapses allowed contaminated water to reach households.
Patwari also urged the administration to arrange temporary clean‑water stations, launch medical camps for early detection of water‑borne illnesses, and ensure rapid treatment for any affected residents.
