High Court Division Bench Refers Shrirampur Political Meeting Case to Single Judge

The division bench of the Calcutta High Court has remanded the Shrirampur political meeting dispute to Justice Sougata Bhattacharya's single‑judge bench for an expedited verdict. The Trinamool Congress had planned a large gathering in the district of Hooghly, with former chief minister Mamata Banerjee as the keynote speaker. While a conditional clearance was granted on Thursday, permission for any post‑event rally was denied.

The state argued that the landowner of the venue objected to its political use, citing that private lands are usually allocated for religious functions and the administration cannot disregard such concerns. After reviewing the case on Friday, the division bench instructed the single‑judge bench to schedule a review hearing on September 18 and to deliver a final order by September 25.

Following the Trinamool Congress's decisive defeat in the recent legislative polls, Banerjee's political activities have been limited to Kolkata. The Shrirampur event was expected to be her first major political appearance outside the capital after the elections.
