High Court Criticises Police for Filing FIR on Doctor Over Illegal Migrant Claims

The Karnataka High Court has sharply rebuked the Bellandur and Vartur police for registering an FIR against Dr. T. Nagendra without conducting a preliminary investigation. The doctor had warned authorities about the presence of illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Bengaluru and later faced allegations of assault from members of that community.

According to the court’s findings, the police acted on a complaint submitted by the alleged migrants, who themselves confessed to living in the city illegally for four years with their families. Justice M. Nagaprasanna questioned the rationale behind initiating criminal proceedings based solely on such a admission.

The bench emphasized that the police failed to verify the identity and legal status of the complainants before moving ahead with the case. The judge warned that allowing illegal migrants to receive unchecked support could cause a rapid, unchecked spread, thereby threatening law and order.

In response, Dr. Nagendra has approached the High Court to have the FIR quashed, arguing that the case is a politically motivated move to stifle dissent. Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra seized the moment to lambast the state government, accusing it of targeting those who raise national‑security concerns and of trying to appease minority groups while suppressing activists.

The episode also draws attention to recent controversies surrounding the NEET exam protests, where BJP leader C.T. Ravi’s statements about religious figures joining the agitation have been under the spotlight.

Vijayendra concluded by calling on the government to focus on genuine public issues rather than employing intimidation against opposition voices.
