Heavy Showers Expected in Coimbatore Hills and Nilgiris as Monsoon Deepens
The monsoon trough is set to deepen over the southern peninsula, bringing heavier rain to the western highlands of Tamil Nadu. The IMD has issued a specific alert for Coimbatore district’s hill areas, as well as the Nilgiris and Theni districts, for Thursday.
Meteorologists attribute the enhanced rainfall to the newly forming low‑pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is channeling moist air into the region. Forecasts indicate intense showers with possible thunder and strong gusts, conditions that could disrupt transportation and daily activities in the affected hill stations.
In lower‑lying parts of Tamil Nadu, the system will produce scattered light to moderate rain, without the risk of widespread flooding. Puducherry may also experience brief showers accompanied by occasional thunderstorms.
The capital, Chennai, will see partly clouded skies on Wednesday, with a modest chance of light rain during the night. Daytime temperatures are expected to stay near seasonal normals, while humidity will be moderated by the cloud cover.
Authorities in the alerted districts have been instructed to monitor river levels and road conditions closely. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official updates and to take precautionary measures against landslides and flash floods.
