Heavy Rain Alerts in Eastern and Northern India as Arnab Weakens

Heavy rain has lashed parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, while the remnants of Cyclone Arnab continue to influence weather across central and eastern India. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings for several states in the coming days.

IMD Director General Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said Cyclone Arnab had gradually weakened and, by Thursday morning, was centred as a depression over central Chhattisgarh. The system was moving north, with wind speeds estimated between 40 and 60 kilometres per hour.

South Odisha recorded around 55 centimetres of rain in the last 24 hours, and landslides were reported at some locations. The intensity of the system is expected to ease as it moves north, but rain is likely to continue over Odisha and Chhattisgarh for the next 24 hours.

East Chhattisgarh and west Odisha may witness heavy to very heavy rain, with extremely heavy showers possible at isolated places where rainfall could exceed 20 centimetres. Chhattisgarh is expected to see more rain on Thursday, and some parts of north Chhattisgarh may receive heavy rain on Friday.

North Bengal, Jharkhand, east Madhya Pradesh and northeast Telangana also received rain in the past 24 hours. Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are likely to see rain on October 29 and 30, with extremely heavy rain possible at some places in Bihar on October 30.

Orange and red alerts have been issued for Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Yellow to orange warnings are in place for eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, parts of West Bengal and Sikkim for the next two days. Weather activity is expected to decline after that. Northern Bihar near Nepal may still see rain on October 31, and rainfall in Nepal could affect rivers such as the Kosi and Gandak in India.
