Health Insurance Claim Scam Foiled in Mumbai, 12 Suspects Held

Mumbai police have disrupted an organized cyber‑fraud operation that masqueraded as a health insurance provider. The operation resulted in twelve arrests and the confiscation of numerous digital tools, including laptops, desktops and mobile devices. Investigators also seized gold coins and assets valued at over INR 1.7 million after shutting down three bogus call centres. The case erupted after an individual lodged a complaint on June 22, alleging that the fraudsters, posing as employees of HDFC Ergo, offered him a "no claim bonus" of INR 1,53,825. The victims were instructed to follow a special procedure, during which the criminals harvested credit card information and withdrew INR 3.43 lakh from the victim's bank. Further probes uncovered a pattern of obtaining personal data and SIM cards from innocent policyholders and then draining their accounts. Three additional suspects linked to the data supply chain have also been detained. Authorities continue to trace the network to locate all affected victims.
