Headmaster Najrul Islam Fatally Injured in Day‑to‑Day Shooting

On Saturday morning, Najrul Islam, a school headmaster from Islampur in West Bengal's Dinajpur district, was wounded by gunfire and later died in hospital.

While en route to school, he was confronted by unidentified attackers in the Madaripur locality. The assailants opened fire multiple times; one bullet hit Islam, causing him to fall on the road.

Paramedics transported him first to the Islampur Sub‑Divisional Hospital and subsequently to a larger medical centre in Siliguri for specialist treatment. Despite intensive care, he passed away close to 1 pm.

The police have begun a detailed investigation, reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas to identify clues. No arrests have been made, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown.

His daughter, Naina Khatoon, described the event as incomprehensible, insisting her father was a man of integrity with no known enemies. His wife, Rukhsana Khatoon, said he was speaking with her on his mobile when he was shot but could not disclose the shooter’s identity.

Colleagues highlighted his punctuality, dedication, and lack of political involvement, stating that the incident has rattled the teaching fraternity.
