Haryana Government Names Mutneja as Advocate General After Chauhan’s Judicial Elevation

The state of Haryana announced on August 22 that senior lawyer Pawan Kumar Mutneja has been appointed as the new Advocate General. The appointment, made under Article 165(1) of the Constitution, was issued by the Governor and takes effect immediately.

Mutneja succeeds Praveen Singh Chauhan, who was recently elevated to the role of Additional Judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Chauhan’s promotion left the Advocate General’s seat open, prompting the government’s prompt action.

Additional Chief Secretary Sudhir Rajpal released the order, adding that the detailed terms of Mutneja’s appointment will be published in a later notice. Mutneja’s professional background includes a long tenure as a senior advocate before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, handling cases in civil, criminal, labour and company law.

He has also previously served as Haryana’s Advocate General, giving him deep insight into the state’s legal affairs. The appointment aligns with the Supreme Court Collegium’s May 5 recommendation to appoint senior advocates as judges in the high courts of Punjab, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, a list that included Chauhan, Rajesh Gaud and Mandeerjit Yadav.
