Updated Chandipura Virus Numbers Show Growing Threat in Gujarat

Gandhinagar, August 8 – The latest bulletin from Gujarat's health department paints a grim picture of the Chandipura virus spread. Since the end of June, 217 individuals have been flagged as suspected cases; laboratory analysis has now confirmed 39 of them, with 23 fatalities among the confirmed patients.

The department has obtained test reports for 208 samples, leaving nine pending. The increase in confirmed cases follows a concerted effort to heighten surveillance, contact tracing and vector control across several districts.

The outbreak's origins trace back to Panchmahal, where two toddlers from Godhra taluka's villages died after contracting the virus. Subsequent investigations led to a massive health‑worker mobilization, including door‑step surveys and extensive sand‑fly control operations.

Medical experts explain that the Chandipura virus, transmitted by sand‑flies, can cause an acute encephalitic syndrome, especially in children. The disease progresses quickly, making timely diagnosis and treatment critical.

A prior August briefing reported 184 suspected cases, 35 confirmed infections and 22 deaths. The current figures reflect a continued climb in both suspected and confirmed counts, as well as an increase in mortality.

Authorities stress that monitoring, testing and preventive measures remain ongoing, with special attention on the nine unresolved lab reports that could further modify the outbreak statistics.
