GSLV-F18 Places NVS-03 in Orbit, Strengthens NavIC

India has taken another step in building its own navigation infrastructure after the successful launch of the NVS-03 satellite. The mission was carried out by ISRO using the GSLV-F18 launch vehicle from Sriharikota, and it is being viewed as a significant boost to the NavIC network.

The launch took place late on Friday, at 11:51 pm, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. The GSLV-F18 rocket successfully placed the NVS-03 satellite into a geosynchronous transfer orbit. It was the 20th flight of the GSLV programme.

NavIC, India's indigenous satellite navigation system, provides positioning, navigation and timing services across the country. Its coverage extends up to 1,500 km beyond India's borders. Experts and officials see the system as central to the nation's navigation autonomy and its use in both defence and civilian sectors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the ISRO team on Saturday. On X, he described the launch as an important step towards strengthening NavIC and said the satellite would help India become self-reliant in key technologies.

NVS-03 joins NVS-01 and NVS-02 in the second generation of NavIC satellites. The first two were launched in May 2023 and January 2025. The new satellite will play a key role in sustaining indigenous navigation services under the next-generation system.

The satellite is equipped with an indigenous atomic clock and L1 signal capability, features that support the reliability and reach of the navigation network.
