Green maritime push as Sindhudurg gets modern electric vessel factory

A Rs 150 crore electric boat manufacturing unit is set to rise in Sindhudurg’s Talvane village, marking a significant milestone in Maharashtra’s push for environmentally friendly marine transport. The project, backed by the Maharashtra Maritime Board and private shipbuilder M. Zoea Marine Services, will feature cutting‑edge propulsion systems that eliminate diesel emissions.

The plant’s design incorporates automated assembly lines, digital twin simulations, and high‑capacity lithium‑ion battery packs, enabling rapid scaling of production. Once operational, the factory will supply the Mumbai Water Metro fleet with electric ferries capable of carrying hundreds of passengers per trip.

State ministers underscored the socioeconomic benefits, pointing to the creation of skilled employment opportunities for the region’s youth. Training modules in marine engineering and battery technology will be introduced in collaboration with local technical institutes.

By integrating green technology into its maritime operations, Maharashtra aims to reduce the carbon intensity of coastal travel, set new standards for Indian shipbuilding, and attract further clean‑energy investments to the state.
