Green Energy Corp Proposes Rs 200 crore Solar Initiative for Tamil Nadu Offices

Tamil Nadu’s Green Energy Corporation Limited has put forward a Rs 200 crore proposal to equip around 200 government office rooftops with solar power plants, delivering a combined capacity of 200 MW. The scheme is designed to lower electricity bills for public buildings and promote clean energy adoption throughout the state. Presented as a comprehensive project report, the plan awaits cabinet approval and is likely to be disclosed during the next assembly session. It adopts a renewable‑energy‑service‑company (RESCO) approach, wherein private firms will install, own, and service the solar systems, supplying electricity directly to the respective offices. The initiative revisits a similar effort launched during the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government, which did not succeed due to lack of private interest. After a joint feasibility study by Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the corporation, the new proposal focuses on offices with sufficient roof space, especially district collector and revenue department premises, to ensure smooth implementation and maximum energy generation.
