Grass Nursery Initiative Aims to Restore 6.5 sq km Loss Annually in Manas

Manas’ grassland cover is shrinking at an estimated rate of 6.5 square kilometres each year, primarily due to invasive flora and over‑grazing. To counter this, the forest department has set up a dedicated nursery where 16 indigenous grass varieties are cultivated in segregated plots.

Once mature, the grasses are planted in zones identified for ecological repair. Mechanical methods are employed to control invasive species, and regular monitoring ensures that newly established grass patches thrive, thereby reinforcing the food base for herbivores and stabilizing the park’s ecosystem.
