Government Pushes Tougher Penalties on Paper Leak Mafia
The Union Ministry of Education moved swiftly on Thursday as the Rajya Sabha endorsed the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, signalling a hardline stance against the organised networks that facilitate exam paper leaks. The amendment, introduced by the minister in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, was debated for about seven hours before being passed. Key provisions include a steep fine of ten crore rupees, mandatory imprisonment, and a fast‑track trial mechanism to ensure speedy justice. The minister cited data showing 52 FIRs registered since the original law’s implementation and a reduction in exam‑related suicide cases. Following the bicameral approval, the bill now proceeds to the President for formal assent.
