Gold Heist Targeting Bride‑to‑Be: Teen Confesses to ₹16 Lakh Robbery

Police in Kanpur arrested a 19‑year‑old on Wednesday after he admitted to stealing gold jewellery and cash amounting to roughly ₹16 lakh. The motive, according to the confession, was to obtain the ornaments needed for his sister’s wedding.

The theft was discovered on August 10 when the homeowner, Sophia, reported that a collection of gold bangles, chains, tops and rings had vanished. Officers from the local police station, supported by forensic and surveillance teams, inspected the property and determined that the burglar entered through a damaged section of the roof.

Interrogation of neighbours and analysis of CCTV footage pointed to a young man named Jafar. The investigation recovered the entire cache of jewellery from his dwelling, along with ₹1,020 in cash and records showing he had spent about ₹7,000 on car servicing shortly before the incident.

Investigators highlighted that the victim’s family was away on the day of the robbery, which Jafar exploited to carry out the crime. The police are continuing to gather evidence for formal charges.
