In a pointed attack on the ruling BJP, Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi on Wednesday accused Assam’s proposed Uniform Civil Code of turning state machinery into a tool for prying into citizens’ bedrooms. The Sivasagar MLA told journalists that the draft law grants bureaucrats sweeping authority to track personal habits, domestic arrangements, and even intimate relationships, a development he described as unprecedented in a democracy. Gogoi cited recent Supreme Court judgments that explicitly bar legislative bodies from interfering in private matters. He warned that once the bill becomes law, government agencies could routinely investigate how people live, whom they meet, and what choices they make behind closed doors. Calling the legislation an assault on personal liberty, Gogoi urged the government to excise clauses that invite such surveillance. He insisted that every resident of Assam deserves the right to privacy free from official monitoring.
