Gender patterns in daily travel reveal a significant imbalance. Nationwide, 61.9 % of male employees travel to work each day, compared with 41.9 % of female employees. The gap is observed in both urban and rural settings.
Public rail‑based systems such as metros, monorails, suburban trains and trams contribute just 5 % to total commuting modes at the national level. Higher usage is recorded in a few states and cities: Maharashtra (20.7 %), West Bengal (16.5 %) and Delhi (14.4 %).
