The Congress party has kicked off its 2026 Assam election campaign with a bang, releasing the first tranche of 42 candidates. Making headlines is Lok Sabha member Gaurav Gogoi, set to shift gears to the Jorhat assembly constituency in a high-stakes bid.
After a disappointing 29 seats in the 2021 polls across Assam’s 126 constituencies, the grand old party is leaving no stone unturned. The list strategically spans diverse regions—Brahmaputra and Barak Valleys, northern hills, and eastern frontiers—while prioritizing SC/ST seats and empowering women candidates.
Key announcements: Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar spearheads Gauripur, Markline Marak takes Golpara West (ST), Girish Barua eyes Bongaigaon, Mahananda Sarkar targets Barpeta (SC), and Ramen Singh Rabha contests Boko-Chaygaon (ST). Nandita Das and Satyabrata Kalita join for Hajo-Sualkuchi (SC) and Kamalpur respectively.
Diganta Burman, Ashok Kumar Sarma, and Ratul Patuwari are fielded in Barkhetri, Nalbari, and Tihu. The lineup continues with Binanda Kumar Saikia in Sipajhar, Bubul Das in Jagiroad (SC), Nurul Huda in Rupahihat, and Tanjil Hussain in Samaguri.
Upal Bania for Raha (SC), Swapan Kar for Lumding, Ripun Bora for Barchala, and Narayan Bhuyan for Behpuria feature prominently. ST seats see Raj Kumar Medok in Jonai and Ratan Angti in Bokajjan.
Eastern Assam boasts Durga Bhumij (Doomdooma), Pratik Bordoloi (Margherita), Pranjal Ghatowar (Chabua-Lahowal), Dhruv Gogoi (Duliajan), and Pranati Phukan (Naharkatia). Gaurav Gogoi leads with Utpal Gogoi (Sonari), Pallavi Saikia Gogoi (Titabor), and Bitupan Saikia (Golaghat).
Barak Valley picks include M. Shanti Kumar Singha (Lakhimpur), Ajit Singh (Udharbond), Dr. Amit Kumar Kalwar (Barkhola), and Zakaria Ahmed (Karimganj North). AICC sources confirm additional lists are in the pipeline, tailored to floods, joblessness, tea workers’ rights, and security concerns, blending youth vigor with seasoned leadership.
