Gate to Cargo Containers to Open at Vizhinjam, Boosting Kerala’s Global Shipping Role

The opening of the cargo gate at Vizhinjam International Seaport signals a transformative phase for Kerala’s maritime sector. Once a dedicated transshipment hub, the port will now accommodate land‑based export‑import movements, allowing containers to be loaded and unloaded directly at the terminal.

Chief Minister V.D. Satishan, accompanied by Industry, IT and Commerce Minister P.K. Kunjalikkutty, inspected the operational readiness of the terminal, focusing on the Vehicle Traffic Management System (VTMS) and other critical infrastructure. Their assessment confirmed that the port is primed for the increased flow of goods.

Stakeholders anticipate that the enhanced capabilities will attract logistics firms, boost trade volumes, and solidify Kerala’s standing on the global shipping route. The development aligns with the United Democratic Front government's strategy to position Vizhinjam as a primary engine of economic growth, drawing investment in logistics, warehousing and ancillary industries.

Despite the absence of the Union Minister from the opening ceremony, the central government’s support remains unaffected, underscoring the project's strategic importance for national and regional commerce.
