Garib Nagar Clearance Opens Way for Bandra Rail Complex
Western Railway has started removing the remaining 94 structures in Mumbai's Garib Nagar area, clearing the way for a major rail development project in Bandra East.
The structures were not removed during an earlier encroachment drive in May. They were kept in place so that eligible people affected by the project could be rehabilitated smoothly.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has allotted permanent accommodation to all 94 eligible persons and handed over their homes. This action is being carried out in line with the Bombay High Court order of October 23.
In its ruling on the petition, the High Court directed eligible persons to vacate the area within one week. Railway officials were then to complete demolition within 48 hours.
Vacating the land will allow large-scale infrastructure work to move ahead in Bandra. The development will help create a more organised and efficient rail environment in the area.
After demolition, an integrated railway complex will be developed on the eastern side of Bandra Terminus. Passengers can expect better facilities and improved routes for movement.
The plan includes a new additional platform, PF-8, along with expanded stabling facilities for trains. Maintenance infrastructure will also be upgraded, which may involve relocating or developing supporting maintenance facilities elsewhere.
Better passenger access, waiting areas and other supporting infrastructure are part of the scheme as well.
These works are part of Western Railway's wider plan to turn the Bandra region into a unified railway complex. The move is expected to greatly improve passenger handling and operational capacity.
With the land now available, critical infrastructure projects can be finished on time. The development is set to benefit travellers and strengthen suburban and long-distance rail connectivity in Mumbai.
