Gandak River Carries Massive Fish Haul from Nepal Flood to Bihar

The sudden rise in water flow from the Nepal border sent a massive school of fish downstream through the Gandak River. By the time the river entered Gopalganj, large numbers of fish—some over forty kilograms—were littering the banks.

Fishermen such as Chhatu Sahani reported that the catch includes big, heavy specimens that are difficult to lift single‑handedly. After collection, the fish are being loaded onto trucks bound for markets in West Bengal, where demand for fresh river fish remains high.

One fisherman disclosed that he alone hauled 2.5 quintals of fish on Friday, underscoring the scale of the arrival. While the flood has caused severe human suffering in Nepal, the same waters have inadvertently delivered a lucrative harvest to Bihar's fish‑dependent communities.
