The CBI scored a significant victory in its fight against chit fund ponzi schemes by apprehending long-time fugitive Tanmay Mirda on January 29. The operation unfolded in West Bengal’s Nadia district, specifically Brahmnagar, following months of meticulous tracking.
Stemming from a 2020 Supreme Court mandate, the probe targeted fraudulent companies operating across West Bengal and Odisha. Mirda, director at Kolkata-based Express Cultivation Limited, orchestrated a scheme defrauding investors of over Rs 2.1 crore through false assurances of lucrative yields.
Countless depositors, many from modest backgrounds, lost everything when repayments halted abruptly. The scam’s mechanics involved collecting funds under guise of agricultural investments, only to siphon them for personal gains.
Despite a detailed chargesheet submitted in early 2022, Mirda remained at large, prompting a non-bailable warrant from a Kolkata metropolitan court. CBI’s multi-pronged strategy—encompassing human intelligence, digital footprints, and on-ground verification—finally paid off.
As Mirda faces judicial custody, interrogations could unravel deeper layers of the conspiracy, potentially implicating more accomplices. CBI spokesperson emphasized zero tolerance, reaffirming commitment to victim restitution and systemic reforms against such predatory practices. This arrest serves as a deterrent to fraudsters exploiting public trust.
