Kaml Kapoor: The Negative Star Within Bollywood’s Heroic Lineage

In a dynasty famed for heroic icons—such as Prithviraj, Shashi, Rishi and Ranbir—Kaml Kapoor emerged as the standout villain. He entered the world on 22 February 1920 in the city of Peshawar, then part of British India, and later studied at Lahore’s DAV College.

His film debut arrived with *Door Chale* (1946) where he played the lead. The film’s lukewarm response motivated him to reinvent himself as a specialist in negative roles, a niche that soon earned him critical and popular acclaim.

Across a career that stretched more than fifty years, Kaml acted in an estimated six hundred productions, ranging from Hindi blockbusters to Punjabi and Gujarati movies. Notable titles include *Don*, *Naarang*, *Mard*, *Aag*, *Deewana*, *Kalicharan*, *Khel Khel Mein*, *Namak Halaal*, as well as *Pakiza*, *Deewar*, *Seeti Aur Geeta* and *Jab Tak Phool Khile*.

He wed Sumandevi Kapoor in 1945; the couple’s five children have continued the family’s artistic legacy. Their youngest daughter married film‑maker Ramesh Bahal, becoming the mother of celebrated director Goldie Bahal. Kaml Kapoor passed away on 2 August 2010 in Mumbai at ninety, yet his powerful villain portrayals remain etched in the memory of Indian cinema.
