Former Kaliganj Resident Files Complaint Over Illegal Government Land Occupancy

Babon Ghosh, originally from Kaliganj in West Bengal, approached the Krishnanagar District Sessions Court on July 15 to register a grievance concerning the unlawful takeover of government lands. He alleges that, beginning in 2016, several state-owned parcels were seized without authorization and later sold to private owners in Shaktipur village of the Benanda‑2 block, affecting both Nadia and Murshidabad districts. According to Ghosh, the illegal occupation caused notable environmental harm, including the cutting down of trees, and resulted in financial loss to the government. Ghosh claims to have reported the matter to both the police and the forest department, yet no substantive action was taken, and he faced intimidation from members of the Trinamool Congress party. Following the recent change in political leadership after the state assembly elections, Ghosh submitted a petition to the Nadia Sessions Court, which on Thursday ordered the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation. TMC officials have dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, insisting that the forthcoming inquiry will reveal the truth.
