Former AAP legislator Nareesh Balian remains at the centre of a high‑profile organised‑crime case after being charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. The Supreme Court, hearing his bail petition, instructed the Delhi Police to file a comprehensive answer within 28 days.

The allegations stem from an alleged partnership with fugitive gangster Kapil Sangwan, also referred to as Nandu. Audio excerpts released by investigators purportedly capture Balian discussing strategies to coerce developers and other individuals into paying protection money. Prosecutors say he acted as a middle‑man, conducting identity verification, preparing bogus property agreements and facilitating forced, low‑price sales.

The Delhi High Court previously refused bail, emphasizing that MCOCA cases merit stricter scrutiny. The Supreme Court’s directive signals a willingness to reassess the bail denial, focusing on procedural fairness and the balance between public safety and personal liberty.
