The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is probing disturbing claims of sexual exploitation and forced religious conversions targeting young women in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Disguised as legitimate gym and fitness operations, an alleged syndicate has come under scrutiny after media exposés revealed the involvement of more than 50 victims and even a rogue police personnel.
This scandal has ignited widespread outrage, spotlighting failures in safeguarding women and preventing abuse of authority. The NHRC, viewing the matter as a blatant human rights breach, has issued notices to top officials, calling for immediate accountability.
Key demands from the petition include a thorough, unbiased investigation, victim support services, dismissal of guilty officers, and nationwide reforms for fitness industry regulations. Under the leadership of member Priyank Kanungo, the commission has activated legal provisions to enforce transparency.
In a broader mandate, NHRC has instructed all state chief secretaries to furnish details on existing rules for gym operations, including registration and safety protocols. The Youth Affairs Ministry and national sports bodies must also clarify their licensing frameworks.
Mirzapur authorities face a tight deadline of two weeks to deliver findings. As the nation watches, the NHRC vows to pursue justice relentlessly, ensuring such predatory networks are dismantled and preventive measures are fortified.
